Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal data the Daily Current Affairs app and the website at generalknowledge.in collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and how you can get it deleted. It applies to every user of the app and the site.

By installing or using the app you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please stop using the app and uninstall it.

1. Who we are

2. Data we collect

2.1 Data you give us

You can read the daily current affairs, one-liners and PDFs without an account. An account is needed only to save test attempts and track progress.

2.2 Data created by your use of the app

• Quiz and test activity — questions attempted, answers selected, questions marked for review, correct and incorrect counts, negative marking applied, time taken, score and accuracy history. This is what powers your progress tracking.
• Content activity — articles and one-liners opened, PDFs downloaded, bookmarks, and read/unread state.
• Notification token — a Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) token so we can send you daily quiz and news alerts.

2.3 Data collected automatically

• Device and app information — device model, operating system version, app version, language, time zone, and country.
• Identifiers — an app instance ID and the Google Advertising ID (used for ads and analytics).
• Log and diagnostic data — IP address, crash reports, stack traces, and performance data.
• Usage analytics — screens opened, session length, and feature usage, in aggregate form.

2.4 What we never collect

We do not collect your contacts, call logs, SMS messages, photos or media library, precise GPS location, health data, financial account details, or any government identity number. We do not ask for an email address to unlock a PDF download, and we do not require social sharing to unlock content.

3. Permissions the app requests

Denying a permission only disables the related feature; the rest of the app continues to work.

4. How we use your data

• To show daily national and international current affairs, one-liners, and quizzes.
• To run timed tests with the question palette, mark-for-review, negative marking and scoring, and to show the written explanation for each question.
• To save every attempt and show your score history, accuracy trend, and the questions you answered incorrectly.
• To deliver monthly and half-yearly PDF compilations.
• To send daily and exam-related push notifications, where you have allowed them.
• To fix crashes, measure performance, and improve the content and the app.
• To show advertisements that keep the app free.
• To detect misuse, automated scraping, and attempts to break test integrity.
• To meet legal and regulatory obligations.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your personal data with data brokers.

5. Legal basis for processing

Where the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (India) applies, we process personal data on the basis of your consent, given when you create an account, allow notifications, or continue using the app after being shown this policy, and for the legitimate uses permitted under that Act. Where the GDPR applies, we rely on consent (notifications and personalised ads), performance of a contract (providing your account and saved attempts), and legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, and product improvement). You may withdraw consent at any time as described in section 9 and section 10.

6. Who we share data with

We share only what each service needs to function:

Google's own handling of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

We may also disclose data when required by law, a court order, or a lawful request from a government authority, or where necessary to protect our rights, users, or the security of the service. If our business is transferred or merged, data may be transferred as part of that transaction, and this policy will continue to apply until replaced by notice to you.

7. Advertising

The app is free and is supported by advertisements delivered through Google AdMob. AdMob may use your Advertising ID to show ads relevant to you and to limit how often you see the same ad. You can reset or delete your Advertising ID at any time in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads, and you can opt out of ad personalisation there. Opting out does not remove ads; it only makes them non-personalised. Where required, we ask for your consent for personalised advertising before serving such ads.

8. How long we keep data

• Account data and test attempts — kept while your account is active, and deleted within 30 days of a deletion request.
• Analytics and crash data — retained by Firebase for up to 14 months, in aggregate or pseudonymous form.
• Server logs — up to 90 days.
• Records we must keep by law — for the period the law requires, and no longer.

9. Deleting your account and your data

You may also ask us to delete only your test attempt history and keep your account. Backup copies are purged on our normal backup cycle, within 90 days of deletion. Anonymised, aggregated statistics that cannot identify you may be retained.

10. Your rights

• Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Correction — correct inaccurate or incomplete data, either in the app or by writing to us.
• Deletion — as described in section 9.
• Withdraw consent — turn off notifications in system settings, opt out of ad personalisation, or delete your account.
• Grievance redressal — raise a complaint with our Grievance Officer, named in section 16.
• Nominate — under the DPDP Act, nominate a person to exercise your rights in the event of death or incapacity.

We respond to requests within 30 days. We may ask you to verify your identity before acting on a request.

11. Children

The app is built for candidates preparing for competitive examinations and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from a child under 13. Users under 18 should use the app with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to us and we will delete it.

12. Security

Data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS. Access to production databases is restricted to authorised personnel and protected by authentication controls. Passwords, where used, are stored as salted hashes and never in plain text. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we will notify you and the relevant authority of a personal data breach where the law requires it.

13. Where data is stored and transferred

Our servers are located in India. Some processors, including Google, may process data on servers outside India. Where data is transferred internationally, we rely on the safeguards offered by those providers and on the permissions available under applicable law.

14. Third-party links

Current affairs articles may link to official notifications, government portals and news sources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their privacy practices. Read their policies before sharing data with them.

15. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes or as the law requires. The "Last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version. For material changes we will show a notice in the app or send a notification. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
