India launched its first open-sea marine fish farming project in the Andaman Sea.
The project was inaugurated by Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (IC) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.
The pilot initiative was launched at North Bay near Sri Vijaya Puram.
The project is a milestone in India’s Blue Economy development.
It aims to harness India’s ocean-based economic potential.
India’s ocean resources remained largely underutilised for nearly 70 years after Independence.
A policy shift towards maritime development has been emphasised since 2014.
The project is implemented by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is the technical arm executing the project.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration is a key implementation partner.
The project strengthens India’s Blue Economy ecosystem.
The Minister visited the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park during the tour.
The park is located near Wandoor in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park was established in 1983.
The park covers 15 islands.
It is known for coral reefs, mangroves, turtles and diverse fish species.
