19 Indian Institutes Feature in QS Global Full-Time MBA Ranking 2027; IIM Bangalore Tops in India

Published 18 September 2026

Nineteen Indian institutes have been included in the QS Global Full-Time MBA Ranking 2027, with IIM Bangalore ranking 64th, IIM Ahmedabad jointly 70th, and IIM Calcutta 95th. While the rankings of the three premier IIMs declined compared to the previous year, Indian participation has risen to 19 institutes in 2027, up from five in 2020. Key evaluation criteria in the QS ranking include Employability, Value for Money, Alumni Outcomes, Thought Leadership, and Diversity, with Employability carrying a 40% weightage. Globally, MIT Sloan School of Management secured the top spot, followed by Harvard Business School, Stanford GSB, Wharton, and Cambridge Judge in the top five.

A total of 19 Indian institutes have secured a place in the QS Global Full-Time MBA Ranking 2027. IIM Bangalore topped the list of Indian institutes, ranking 64th. It was followed by IIM Ahmedabad at joint 70th place and IIM Calcutta at 95th place. However, all three premier IIMs saw a decline in their global rankings compared to the previous edition. This ranking assesses global MBA programs based on parameters such as quality, employability, return on investment, and alumni outcomes.

Changes in Rankings of Premier Indian IIMs:

IIM Bangalore dropped from 52nd place in 2026 to 64th place in 2027. IIM Ahmedabad fell from 58th to joint 70th place, while IIM Calcutta dropped from 64th to 95th place. Despite this, IIM Bangalore retained its position as India's top MBA institute for the fourth consecutive year. The institute demonstrated remarkable performance in indicators such as employability and thought leadership.

Growing Global Participation of Indian MBA Institutions:

There has been a sustained increase in the number of Indian institutions featured in the QS MBA Rankings. While only 5 Indian institutions were included in 2020 and 7 in 2022, this figure rose to 19 in 2027. Five Indian institutions made their debut in the rankings in 2027. Among the new Indian entrants, O.P. Jindal Global University topped the list, while Jaipuria Institute of Management, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, and Vikrant University Gwalior also secured a place in the rankings.

Key Evaluation Criteria for QS MBA Rankings:

In the QS Global Full-Time MBA Rankings, MBA programs are evaluated primarily based on five key indicators: Employability (40%), Value for Money (20%), Alumni Outcomes (15%), Thought Leadership (15%), and Diversity (10%). Among these, employability carries the highest weightage. Consequently, an institution's ranking is not based solely on academic reputation but also incorporates factors such as graduates' career outcomes, return on investment, employer perception, and diversity.

Top Global MBA Institutions:

The MIT Sloan School of Management secured the top spot in the 2027 global rankings. It was followed by Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, The Wharton School, and Cambridge Judge Business School, rounding out the top five. This marked the first time MIT Sloan achieved the number one position in these rankings, highlighting the dominant standing of leading US and European business schools in global MBA education.

Significance for UPSC:

This news is relevant for GS Paper-2 (Education and Human Resource Development), GS Paper-3 (Skill Development and Employment), and the Essay paper. UPSC aspirants should view this in the context of the global competitiveness of Indian higher education, management education, employability, skill development, industry-academia linkages, the internationalization of higher education, and human capital formation. Of particular importance is the fact that Indian institutions are increasingly participating in global MBA rankings, with their performance being continuously assessed in areas such as employability, research/thought leadership, diversity, and international exposure.
