365-Day Maternity Leave for Third Child in Tamil Nadu: A New Initiative for Women Employees' Welfare

Published 20 August 2026

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that female government employees will now be granted 365 days of maternity leave upon the birth of a third child as well. This decision has been taken with a focus on women's empowerment, social welfare, and maternal and child health. In the state, the duration of maternity leave was increased from 90 days to 6 months in 2011, to 9 months in 2016, and to 365 days for eligible female employees in 2021. The extended maternity leave is expected to boost female workforce participation, gender equality at the workplace, and the economic and social security of women.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that female government employees will now be granted 365 days of maternity leave upon the birth of a third child. Previously, the provision for female government employees with two or more living children was limited to only 12 weeks of maternity leave with full pay.

Objective of the New Policy:

This decision has been taken keeping women's empowerment and social welfare in mind. Extended maternity leave will provide female employees with more time to care for themselves and their newborns after childbirth, enabling a better balance between work and maternal responsibilities.

Evolution of Maternity Leave in Tamil Nadu:

The duration of maternity leave in the state has been progressively increased. It was raised from 90 days to 6 months in 2011, to 9 months in 2016, and to 365 days in July 2021 for female government employees with fewer than two living children. As per the recent announcement, the decision has now been made to extend the 365-day benefit to cases involving a third child as well.

Link to Female Workforce Participation:

Adequate maternity leave can relieve women of the pressure to quit their jobs or return to work immediately after childbirth. This can boost female labour force participation, gender equality in the workplace, and women's economic participation.

Social and Child Welfare Dimension:

Maternity leave is not merely about employee welfare; it is also linked to maternal and infant health, newborn care, and family social support. Thus, such policies reinforce a broader perspective on human development and social security.

Significance for the UPSC Exam:

This topic is relevant to GS Paper-II (Women and Child Development, Social Justice, and Government Policies) and GS Paper-III (Inclusive Growth and Human Resources). In answer writing, it can be cited as an example of workplace gender equality, women-centric welfare policies, and maternity protection.
