During the India-Indonesia bilateral summit held in Jakarta, both nations signed a defense agreement for the supply of the indigenous Astra Mk-1 air-to-air missile (BVRAAM).

This marks a significant step towards strengthening India's defense exports and strategic partnership.

Introduction to Astra Mk-1

Astra Mk-1 is India's first indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM).

It was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). It is capable of targeting enemy fighter aircraft located beyond visual range.

Key Technical Features

The missile can fly at speeds of approximately Mach 4.5 and engage aerial targets at distances of 80–110 km.

It utilizes a three-stage guidance system, an active radio frequency (RF) seeker, and a smokeless solid-propellant rocket motor, which enhance its accuracy and survivability.

Operations and Platform

Astra Mk-1 is currently deployed with the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. Additionally, the process of integrating it with LCA Tejas Mk-1A and Rafale fighter jets is underway, which will further bolster the Indian Air Force's air combat capabilities.

Astra Missile Family

The Astra Mk-2 is an advanced missile with a range of approximately 200 km, while the Astra Mk-3 (Gandiv) is a next-generation missile currently under development based on SFDR (Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet) technology, aiming for a range exceeding 350 km.
