Discovery of eRASSU J0608 Gives New Direction to Gravitational Wave Studies; Two White Dwarfs Orbit Each Other in 6.24 Minutes

Published 25 September 2026

A team led by Indian researchers studied an ultracompact double-white-dwarf binary system named eRASSU J0608, in which the two white dwarfs orbit each other in approximately 6.24 minutes. This system exhibits X-ray emission driven by "direct-impact accretion," where matter falls directly onto the companion white dwarf without forming an accretion disk. Its orbital period is rapidly decreasing, likely due to the loss of energy and angular momentum via gravitational radiation; the estimated chirp mass is approximately 0.43 solar masses. eRASSU J0608 could serve as a potential verification source for future space-based gravitational wave missions like LISA.

An international team of scientists, led by Indian researchers, has studied an extremely compact binary system designated eRASSU J060839.5–704014 (eRASSU J0608). The system comprises two white dwarfs that orbit each other in just 374.15013 seconds—approximately 6.24 minutes. It belongs to the class of rapidly evolving ultracompact double-white-dwarf binary systems. The research findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on August 10, 2026.

White Dwarfs and Ultracompact Binaries:

White dwarfs are stellar remnants typically formed when low- or medium-mass stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and shed their outer layers. In the eRASSU J0608 system, two white dwarfs are situated at an extremely close distance. Its exceptionally short orbital period makes it a significant example of an ultracompact binary and a valuable subject for scientists studying the final stages of stellar evolution.

X-rays from Direct-impact Accretion:

A distinctive feature of this system is that material flowing from one white dwarf falls directly onto the other without forming a standard accretion disk; this process is known as "direct-impact accretion." The high-velocity impact of this material against the surface of the second white dwarf creates a very hot region, resulting in X-ray emission. Scientists have identified thermal components with temperatures ranging from approximately 1.5 to 1.7 million Kelvin.

Orbital Decay and Gravitational Radiation:

Observations spanning roughly three and a half years revealed that the system's orbital period is decreasing at a rate of approximately 4.7 × 10⁻¹¹ seconds per second. This is likely caused by the loss of orbital energy and angular momentum due to gravitational radiation. The study estimates the system's "chirp mass" to be approximately 0.43 solar masses. Chirp mass is the effective mass that plays a crucial role in determining the frequency and evolution of gravitational waves generated by a binary system.

LISA and Gravitational-Wave Astronomy:

eRASSU J0608 could serve as a potential "verification source" for future gravitational-wave detection, holding particular significance for LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna). LISA is a proposed space-based gravitational wave mission by the European Space Agency (ESA), involving three spacecraft separated by distances of approximately a million kilometers. Its primary objective is to study low-frequency gravitational waves.

Scientific significance for UPSC:

This discovery relates to topics such as stellar evolution, white dwarfs, binary stellar systems, gravitational waves, and multi-messenger astronomy. Electromagnetic observations of sources like eRASSU J0608 could be combined with gravitational wave signals in the future. This will aid in understanding the structure and evolution of extremely dense stellar systems and the nature of gravity. As its precise distance remains uncertain, future X-ray and optical observations could further clarify its physical properties.
