Formation of BJP's New National Team: Emphasis on Organizational Restructuring and Social-Regional Representation

Published 18 August 2026

The BJP's new national team comprises 13 National Vice-Presidents, 8 National General Secretaries, and 16 National Secretaries, striking a balance between seasoned leaders and fresh faces. Key organizational responsibilities have been assigned to leaders such as Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Tirath Singh Rawat, Smriti Irani, and Biplab Kumar Deb within this new structure. There is a strong emphasis on enhancing representation across various states and social groups, with inclusion for women and minority leaders. The BJP has also focused significantly on specific wings—such as those for youth, women, OBCs, farmers, SCs, STs, and minorities—as well as on media, social media, and organizational work in the Northeast.

The new organizational structure reflects a blend of experienced leaders and new faces. The 13 National Vice-Presidents include leaders such as Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Ram Madhav, D. Purandeswari, Tirath Singh Rawat, and Baijayant 'Jay' Panda. Meanwhile, the 8 National General Secretaries include prominent names like Smriti Irani, Biplab Kumar Deb, Vinod Tawde, Sunil Bansal, and Satish Poonia. Several leaders, including K. Surendran and Anil Antony, have been appointed as National Secretaries.

Balancing Experience and New Leadership

The new team accommodates former Chief Ministers, former Union Ministers, veteran organizational leaders, and relatively new political faces. For instance, Vasundhara Raje Scindia and Tirath Singh Rawat have been appointed as National Vice-Presidents, while Smriti Irani and Biplab Kumar Deb have become National General Secretaries. This move illustrates a strategy to strike a balance between experience and fresh energy within the organization.

Regional and Social Representation

Leaders from various states and social groups have been included in the new team. This reflects an effort to enhance regional diversity and social representation within the BJP's national organizational structure. According to reports, the new team includes 10 women and 6 leaders from minority communities. This point is significant for the UPSC examination because social and regional representation within the organizational structure of political parties is linked to India's pluralistic democratic system.

General Secretary (Organization) and their role in the party organization

B.L. Santhosh has been retained as the National General Secretary (Organization). Shivprakash and Saudan Singh have been appointed as National Joint General Secretaries (Organization). In a cadre-based political party like the BJP, organizational positions hold immense importance. The role of organizational leadership involves coordinating across various levels of the party—national, state, district, and booth—and strengthening the party's organizational activities.

Special focus on 'Morchas' (fronts), media, and the Northeast

To reach out to diverse social groups, the BJP has appointed presidents for its youth, women, OBC, farmers, SC, ST, and minority fronts. Additionally, Sambit Patra has been appointed as the Northeast Coordinator, and Rajiv Babbar as the Joint Coordinator. The party has also assigned specific organizational responsibilities for media and social media operations. This reflects the growing importance of digital political communication, social outreach, and regional organization within modern political parties.

Constitutional and political significance for UPSC

The organization and internal functioning of political parties constitute a vital part of democratic politics in India. While the Constitution does not prescribe a detailed organizational structure for political parties, they serve as key institutional vehicles for electoral democracy. Under Article 324, the Election Commission is constitutionally mandated to superintend, direct, and control elections, whereas the registration of political parties takes place under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. This restructuring by the BJP can be linked to UPSC topics such as political parties, internal democracy, electoral politics, representation, party organization, and Indian democracy.
