Former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on 12 July 2026 at the age of 74. He served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013. Following his demise, the Government of Qatar declared national mourning, while India also observed one day of State Mourning in his honour.

Contribution to the Making of Modern Qatar

Sheikh Hamad is widely recognized as the architect of modern Qatar. Under his leadership, Qatar extensively developed the North Field, one of the world's largest natural gas reserves, and emerged as one of the leading exporters of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This transformation made Qatar one of the world's wealthiest economies.

Economic and Institutional Reforms

During his rule, priority was given to the energy sector, along with education, healthcare, infrastructure, and global investment. The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) was significantly strengthened, enabling the country to make strategic investments worldwide through its Sovereign Wealth Fund, thereby reinforcing Qatar's economic position.

Global Influence and Diplomatic Role

Under Sheikh Hamad's leadership, Al Jazeera was established in 1996, giving Qatar a prominent place in the global media landscape. During his tenure, Qatar expanded its international influence through mediation, energy diplomacy, and global investments, enhancing its role in international politics and the global economy.

2022 FIFA World Cup and Challenges

During his reign, Qatar secured the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, leading to extensive infrastructure development across the country. However, the event also attracted international criticism regarding human rights, the treatment of migrant workers, labour reforms, and the bidding process.

Importance from UPSC Examination Perspective

This topic is important for UPSC Prelims in relation to West Asia, LNG, Energy Security, Sovereign Wealth Funds, prominent international personalities, and India–Qatar relations. For UPSC Mains (GS Paper II – International Relations and GS Paper III – Energy Security & Economic Development), it serves as a valuable contemporary example while discussing energy diplomacy, the strategic importance of Gulf countries, global investment, and India's energy imports.
