Ganga Grandmasters Win Maiden Global Chess League 2026 Title

Ganga Grandmasters won the championship title for the first time in the fourth edition of the Global Chess League (GCL) 2026. In the final held at the Lalit Ashok Stadium in Bengaluru, Ganga Grandmasters defeated Alpine APL Pipers 7-5. In the second leg, Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated Magnus Carlsen, and Stavroula Tsolakidou defeated Koneru Humpy, sealing the team's victory. The total prize money for GCL 2026 was US$ 1 million, with the winning team, Ganga Grandmasters, receiving US$ 250,000.

Ganga Grandmasters won the championship title for the first time in the fourth edition of the Global Chess League (GCL) 2026. The tournament was held from September 5 to September 13, 2026.

Thrilling Victory in the Final:

In the final played at the Lalit Ashok Stadium in Bengaluru, Ganga Grandmasters defeated Alpine APL Pipers 7-5 in a two-leg knockout final. The first leg ended in a 3-3 draw, while Ganga secured a 4-2 victory in the second leg.

Decisive Matches:

The performances of Ian Nepomniachtchi and Stavroula Tsolakidou played a crucial role in Ganga Grandmasters' victory in the second leg. Nepomniachtchi defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen, while Tsolakidou defeated India's Koneru Humpy.

Participation of Indian Players:

Indian chess players Vidit Gujrathi and Koneru Humpy also participated in the final. This highlighted the participation and competitiveness of Indian chess talent at the international level within the league.

Prize Money:

The total prize money for GCL 2026 was US$ 1 million. The winning team, Ganges Grandmasters, received a prize purse of $250,000, while the runners-up, Alpine APL Pipers, received $125,000.

The Global Chess League (GCL) exemplifies modern franchise-based chess competitions, integrating male, female, and Under-21 talent within a single team structure.
