Bangladesh has sought China's technical and economic participation in the Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project for the Teesta River. In June 2026, Bangladesh and China agreed to enhance cooperation in areas including river management, flood control, erosion prevention, irrigation, and inland water transport regarding the Teesta. The strategic importance of this for India is heightened by the fact that the Teesta basin is located near the Siliguri Corridor (the 'Chicken's Neck'). Thus, India must navigate the Teesta issue by balancing water diplomacy, relations with neighboring countries, national security, and environmental sustainability.
