IIHT SUTRA 2026 Boosts Technological Innovation and Skill Development in the Indian Handloom Sector
On August 14, 2026, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated the first national conference of IIHTs, titled 'IIHT SUTRA 2026', in New Delhi, aiming to promote technical education, research, and innovation in the handloom sector. The conference emphasized developing IIHTs into 'Centres of Excellence' and preparing a skilled technical workforce aligned with industry needs. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with Grasim Industries, the Northern India Textile Research Association, and IIM Sambalpur to foster skill development, research, internships, leadership development, and entrepreneurship. This initiative is significant for strengthening the handloom sector's technological modernization, global competitiveness, rural livelihoods, and women's empowerment.

Its objective is to strengthen technical education, research, and innovation within the Indian handloom sector.
Developing IIHTs as Centres of Excellence
A primary goal of the conference is to develop the Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHTs) into 'Centres of Excellence' for technical education, research, and technological innovation. These institutes offer diploma and degree courses related to handloom and textile technology and contribute to producing a skilled technical workforce that meets industry requirements.
Strategic Partnerships Between Industry and Academic Institutions
During the conference, significant MoUs were signed with various institutions: with Grasim Industries Limited for curriculum enhancement, internships, and skill development; and with the Northern India Textile Research Association for collaborative research and technical support. Additionally, a collaboration with IIM Sambalpur will be undertaken regarding leadership development, entrepreneurship, and institutional capacity building. This serves as an example of fostering industry-academia collaboration.
Technological Modernization in the Handloom Sector
The handloom sector is not only rooted in traditional skills and cultural heritage but also serves as a vital source of employment and rural livelihoods. A large number of women rely on the handloom sector for their livelihoods. Therefore, skill development, technological upgrades, and improved market access within this sector can strengthen women's economic participation.
‘Handloom Change Makers’ and ‘Weaving India’s Handloom Future’
A publication titled "Handloom Change Makers," documenting the achievements of notable IIHT alumni, was released during the conference. Alongside this, a film titled "Weaving India’s Handloom Future" was also launched, showcasing the contribution of IIHTs to the Indian textile sector. In this way, the conference highlighted not only institutional collaboration but also the technical and human resource potential of the handloom sector.
