India Aims for ‘Bharatiya Antariksh Station’ by 2035: Preparing for a New Era in Human Spaceflight
India has set a target to establish the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) by 2035, with approval already granted for its first module. This project will mark a significant expansion of India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. Through the space station, India will promote long-term human space activities, scientific research, and microgravity studies. National Space Day is celebrated on August 23, highlighting India's space achievements and the importance of space-based applications.
India has set a goal to establish its own Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) by 2035. This announcement was made by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan during the third National Space Day celebrations held in Ahmedabad on August 23, 2026.
Approval for the First Module:
Approval has already been granted for the first module of the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station. Establishing the space station will advance India's space program beyond satellite and launch services, moving it towards long-term human space activities.
Link to the Gaganyaan Program:
The Bharatiya Antariksh Station project will serve as a significant expansion of India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. The technology, experience, and human spaceflight capabilities developed through Gaganyaan will prove useful for the operation of future space stations.
Foundation for long-term human space activities:
An indigenous space station will provide India with the opportunity to establish a long-term human presence in space. It will facilitate scientific research, the testing of new technologies, microgravity studies, and preparations for future human space missions.
National Space Day and India's space applications:
National Space Day is celebrated in India annually on August 23rd. According to ISRO, the country's space-based applications have expanded across more than 50 sectors, including Earth observation, remote sensing, telecommunications, disaster management, navigation, education, and broadcasting.
Role of the private sector and significance for UPSC:
Private sector participation in India's space industry is growing, particularly in areas such as satellite manufacturing, payload development, launch services, and space applications. The Indian Space Station project is of immense importance for the UPSC examination, particularly regarding human spaceflight, space policy, public-private partnerships, ISRO, the space economy, Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), and future space diplomacy.
