India–Australia Sports Cooperation Roadmap: A New Boost to Preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2032 Olympic Games

Published 14 July 2026

India and Australia have announced the India–Australia Sports Cooperation Roadmap, giving a new direction to long-term strategic cooperation in the sports sector. The roadmap builds upon the 2023 India–Australia Sports Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and focuses on coaching, sports science, sports technology, athlete development, and the promotion of women's sports. Both countries will also collaborate in sports infrastructure, sports governance, talent development, and knowledge sharing. The initiative is expected to play a significant role in preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (Ahmedabad), the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, and India's future aspirations to host the Olympic Games.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Australia, India and Australia jointly announced the India–Australia Sports Cooperation Roadmap. The roadmap has been designed to institutionalize sports cooperation between the two countries and promote long-term collaboration in coaching, sports science, athlete development, sports technology, and major international sporting events.

Objective and Foundation of the Roadmap

The roadmap is based on the 2023 India–Australia Sports Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Its primary objective is to strengthen cooperation in capacity building, sports science research, sports governance, the sports industry, women's sports, and sports innovation. The initiative is expected to modernize and enhance the competitiveness of the sports ecosystems of both countries.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The roadmap emphasizes collaboration in coach and athlete training, sports science and sports medicine, sports technology, sports infrastructure, sports governance, talent identification and development, and increasing women's participation in sports. Both countries will also facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices between their sports institutions.

Significance in the Context of Global Sporting Events

The initiative is considered highly significant for preparations related to the proposed 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, and India's future bid to host the Olympic Games. India and Australia will cooperate in sports event management, pre-competition training, sports infrastructure development, and athlete support systems. In addition, the two countries will organize exhibition matches and youth competitions in sports such as Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Australian Rules Football (AFL), and Basketball.

UPSC Perspective

This topic is important for GS Paper-II (International Relations) as well as GS Paper-I (Society – Sports and Youth Development). It is closely associated with Sports Diplomacy, Soft Power, People-to-People Relations, Youth Engagement, Capacity Building, and the growing importance of international cooperation through global sporting events. The initiative also reflects India's ambition to strengthen its sports infrastructure, sports economy, and position as a global sporting nation.
