The Indian Army has inducted an indigenous Extreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel for the operation of military vehicles in extreme cold regions; it remains effective even at temperatures as low as –42°C. This fuel will strengthen the Army's operational readiness and all-weather mobility by overcoming issues associated with conventional diesel in high-altitude Himalayan regions like Eastern Ladakh and Siachen. Developed in compliance with BS-VI and IS 1460:2025 standards, this technology marks a significant step towards promoting 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) and indigenous defense technology. XWG Diesel will be used in key military platforms—including the T-90, T-72, BMP-2K, and K-9 Vajra—significantly improving military operations and maintenance capabilities in border areas.

The Indian Army has inducted Extreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel, an indigenous fuel specifically developed for operating military vehicles in regions with extremely low temperatures. This fuel remains in a liquid state and functions effectively even at –42°C, whereas conventional diesel tends to thicken in extreme cold, clogging fuel lines and filters. XWG Diesel has been developed in accordance with BS-VI and IS 1460:2025 standards.

Strategic Necessity and Significance

In high-altitude Himalayan regions like Eastern Ladakh and Siachen, the freezing of conventional diesel due to extreme cold used to hinder military operations. This caused difficulties in starting engines, increased maintenance costs, and adversely affected combat readiness. By addressing these challenges, XWG Diesel will bolster the Indian Army's operational readiness and all-weather mobility.

Indigenous Defense Technology and Atmanirbhar Bharat

XWG Diesel has been developed using indigenous technology in collaboration with India's leading oil companies. This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India), indigenous defence production, and technological self-reliance in the defence sector. It also exemplifies efforts to reduce dependence on imported specialized fuels and encourage domestic Research and Development (R&D).

Military Utility and Operational Benefits

This fuel is suitable for key Indian Army platforms such as T-90 and T-72 tanks, BMP-2K Infantry Combat Vehicles, K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers, and logistics/transport vehicles operating in high-altitude Himalayan regions. A key feature is that it requires no technical modifications to existing engines, allowing for rapid induction into the Army's fleet.

Strengthening Defence Infrastructure at High Altitudes

The Indian Army has established high-altitude maintenance centers at locations like Nyoma and Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO), situated at altitudes of approximately 14,500 feet. The use of XWG diesel will bolster the maintenance capabilities of armored vehicles deployed in these areas, facilitate rapid deployment, and ensure the continuity of military operations in border regions. This strengthens India's strategic preparedness along its northern borders.
