Indigenous Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid: A New Milestone Towards Agricultural Self-Reliance and Value Addition
India has developed indigenous hybrid seeds for non-GMO popcorn maize with high expansion capacity for the first time, reducing reliance on foreign hybrid technology. This initiative will curtail seed imports, save foreign exchange, and boost self-reliance in the agricultural sector. More than 17,500 farmers across eight states are involved in this initiative, fostering farmer-entrepreneur partnerships, improving market access, and increasing incomes. Value addition through the processing, packaging, storage, and marketing of maize will create new employment opportunities in rural areas.
India has released indigenous hybrid seeds for non-GMO popcorn maize with high expansion capacity for the first time. The seeds were unveiled on August 24, 2026, by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan at Musunuru in the Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh. This marks a significant achievement in indigenous seed technology within the agricultural sector.
Reducing Dependence on Foreign Hybrid Technology
Until now, India relied heavily on foreign hybrid technology for the production of premium-quality popcorn maize. The new indigenous variety holds the potential to reduce dependence on seed imports, save foreign exchange, and enhance self-reliance in agriculture. This initiative also reinforces the vision of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) within the agricultural sector.
Significance of Non-GMO Seeds
This variety is GMO-free, meaning it does not utilize genetically modified organism technology. This makes it particularly significant in terms of biotechnology, food safety, and consumer choice. High-quality, non-GMO agricultural products can open up new opportunities in both domestic and international markets.

Under this initiative, more than 17,500 farmers across eight states are engaged in cultivation across approximately 40,000 acres of land.
