ISMA–ICAR-ISRI Partnership for Quality Sugarcane Seed Production: An Initiative to Boost Agricultural Productivity and Farmers' Income

On August 13, 2026, ISMA and ICAR-ISRI signed an MoU for the production of quality sugarcane planting material, aiming to provide farmers with disease-free and genetically pure seeds. The project entails an investment of ₹80 crore, with both institutions contributing ₹40 crore each; the center will be established at the ICAR-ISRI campus in Lucknow. The center will help enhance productivity, sugar recovery, and the competitiveness of the sugarcane industry through the rapid multiplication of new sugarcane varieties and variety replacement. Digital tagging and traceability will strengthen the monitoring of seed quality, source, and supply, while ensuring farmers receive scientific technical support and superior planting material.

On August 13, 2026, the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) and the ICAR–Indian Sugarcane Research Institute (ICAR-ISRI) signed an MoU for the production of quality sugarcane planting material. The primary objective is to provide farmers with disease-free, genetically pure, and high-quality sugarcane planting material. This initiative marks a significant step towards taking agricultural research to the field level and boosting sugarcane productivity.

₹80 Crore Project and Center in Lucknow

A total investment of ₹80 crore will be made in this project. ISMA and ICAR-ISRI will make equal contributions of ₹40 crore each. The proposed center will be established at the ICAR-ISRI campus in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It will specifically assist sugar mills and farmers located in India's subtropical sugarcane-growing regions by providing them with quality planting material.

Disease-Free and Genetically Pure Planting Material

Diseases and poor-quality planting material adversely affect sugarcane productivity. The proposed center will place special emphasis on plant health, genetic purity, and quality assurance. Disease-free planting material will be produced through scientific certification and regular quality checks. This will provide farmers access to superior varieties and holds the potential to improve sugarcane yield per acre as well as sugar recovery rates.

Rapid Multiplication of New Varieties and Variety Replacement

A key role of this center will be the rapid multiplication of new and improved sugarcane varieties. It will facilitate the gradual replacement of older or low-yielding varieties with those that offer higher yields and better sugar recovery. Through crop diversification and varietal replacement, this process can strengthen sugarcane productivity, disease resistance, and the long-term competitiveness of the sugar industry.

Digital Traceability and Scientific Quality Monitoring

The project will develop a system for the digital tagging and traceability of sugarcane seeds and planting material. This will enable the identification of the source of a specific seed lot and the process by which it reached the farm. In the agricultural sector, such traceability systems strengthen quality control, accountability, and supply-chain management. Scientists from ICAR-ISRI will also provide technical guidance to farmers and the associated sugar mills.
