ISRO Approves CE20 Cryogenic Engine for LVM3-M7

On July 6, 2026, ISRO successfully completed the flight acceptance test of the CE20 cryogenic engine at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. This engine will be used in the cryogenic upper stage of the LVM3-M7 mission. A new nozzle protection system was successfully utilized for the first time during the test. The CE20 engine has already proven its reliability in the Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and other LVM3 missions. Additionally, it has met the human-rating standards required for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, significantly bolstering India's human spaceflight capabilities.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully completed the flight acceptance test of the CE20 cryogenic engine on July 6, 2026, at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.

This engine will be utilized in the cryogenic upper stage of the LVM3-M7 mission.

Introduction to the CE20 Cryogenic Engine

The CE20 is an indigenously developed cryogenic upper-stage engine designed for the LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3) launch vehicle.

It utilizes ultra-low-temperature propellants—specifically liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen—enabling the placement of heavy satellites into orbit.

Key Features of the Test

The flight acceptance test marked the first use of a newly developed nozzle protection system.

The engine demonstrated its reliability by operating successfully at a thrust of 19.5 tonnes for 45 seconds and at a maximum thrust of 22 tonnes for 25 seconds.

Role in LVM3 and Major Missions

LVM3 is India's most powerful operational launch vehicle. The CE20 engine has been successfully utilized in the Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 missions, as well as in several commercial launch missions.

Following testing, this engine will be integrated into the C32 cryogenic stage of the LVM3-M7 launch vehicle.

Significance for the Gaganyaan Mission

The CE20 engine has met the 'Human-Rating Qualification' standards required for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

This demonstrates that the engine meets the safety, reliability, and performance standards expected for crewed spaceflights.
