Launch of Ozone-based Drinking Water Purification Project in Himachal Pradesh
The state's first ozone-based drinking water purification project has been launched in Dehra, Himachal Pradesh, with an allocation of approximately ₹46 crore. The project aims to improve water quality and neutralize microorganisms by leveraging the powerful oxidizing properties of ozone (O₃). Efforts are also underway to promote the ‘Mukhyamantri Ka Apna Parivar Sukhi Parivar’ scheme for economically weaker families and to encourage the participation of youth and women's groups in forest conservation. Plans are in place to foster inclusive and sustainable regional development in Dehra by focusing on the expansion of infrastructure for education, veterinary services, and drinking water supply.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the state's first ozone-based drinking water purification project in Dehra, Kangra district. The government has allocated approximately ₹46 crore for this project. Its primary objective is to enhance the quality of drinking water available to the public.
How does ozone-based water purification work?
This project utilizes ozone (O₃) gas for water disinfection. Ozone is a potent oxidizing agent capable of neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. In water treatment, it can serve as either an alternative or a supplement to chlorination. It can also improve the odor and taste of the water.
Broad Expansion of the Project
Following its implementation in Dehra, there are plans to extend the project to other regions of Himachal Pradesh. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening safe drinking water access, public health, and water quality management. Safe water supply is particularly crucial in hilly states, where geographical conditions make the development of water infrastructure challenging.
‘Mukhyamantri Ka Apna Parivar Sukhi Parivar’ Scheme
The Chief Minister also highlighted another of the state's welfare initiatives, the ‘Mukhyamantri Ka Apna Parivar Sukhi Parivar’ scheme. Surveys have been initiated at the Panchayat level, and the scheme is slated for implementation starting October 2nd. Provisions under this scheme include financial assistance and the supply of up to 300 units of free electricity to economically weaker families. This serves as an example of social security and targeted welfare initiatives.
Community Participation in Forest Conservation
Through the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana, youth and women's groups are being actively involved in afforestation and forest conservation efforts. Plans are in place to provide Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with financial aid of up to ₹1.20 lakh, alongside incentive payments for plantation activities. This initiative integrates community participation, afforestation, livelihood generation, and climate resilience.
Education and Veterinary Infrastructure in Dehra
Under development plans for the Dehra region, there is a proposal to promote CBSE-affiliated schools and establish additional schools in the future. Furthermore, the establishment of a veterinary hospital at Baddal Thor has been announced. Expanding basic services—such as education, healthcare, animal husbandry, and water supply—is crucial for fostering inclusive and regional development.
