The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully tested three critical safety systems for the Gaganyaan Mission on 12 July 2026. On 12 July 2026, ISRO successfully completed three system-level qualification tests for the Gaganyaan Mission. These included successful validation of the Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS), the Crew-Service Umbilical Unit (CSU-2) Separation Mechanism, and the Apex Cover Separation System. The achievement marks an important milestone in the preparation for India's first human spaceflight mission.

Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS)

The Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS) is designed to automatically restore the crew module to an upright position after splashdown in the sea. The system activates flotation devices using compressed cold gas, ensuring the safe recovery of astronauts. It is one of the most critical technologies for ensuring crew safety during human spaceflight missions.

Umbilical Separation and Apex Cover System

The Crew-Service Umbilical Unit (CSU-2) safely disconnects the mechanical and electrical connections between the Service Module and the Crew Module before re-entry. Meanwhile, the Apex Cover Separation System releases the parachute assembly at the appropriate time, enabling the crew module to descend safely and in a controlled manner. Both systems are essential for mission success and crew safety.

Objective of the Gaganyaan Mission

Gaganyaan is India's first indigenous human spaceflight programme, aimed at sending Indian astronauts (Gaganyatris) into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and bringing them back safely after completing the mission.
