Published 25 August 2026

India has achieved a significant milestone in defence indigenisation by developing the first fully indigenous AK-203 ‘Sher’ assault rifle. It has been manufactured by the Indo-Russian joint venture, IRRPL, at the Korwa factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. All components and raw materials for the rifle are produced in India, and it has successfully undergone testing, including burst-fire trials. This achievement marks a crucial step towards the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiatives, as well as the replacement of the aging INSAS rifles.

India has achieved a significant milestone in the field of indigenous defence production by developing the first fully indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, named ‘Sher’. All components and raw materials used in the construction of the prototype are manufactured in India.

Manufacturing Entity and Location:

The rifle has been manufactured by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) at the Korwa factory in the Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. IRRPL is a joint venture established in 2019 through the collaboration of India and Russia.

Strengthening ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat:

The production of the ‘Sher’ rifle represents a significant step towards the complete indigenisation of India's defence equipment. This achievement bolsters national efforts regarding 'Make in India', 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', and the reduction of import dependency in defence manufacturing.

Testing by the Indian Army:

According to reports, the rifle prototype has successfully undergone testing, including burst-fire trials. Further trials by the Indian Army are planned for September 2026 to validate its performance and the indigenous version against military requirements.

Mass Production for the Indian Army:

IRRPL is working towards fulfilling an order for approximately 6 lakh AK-203 rifles for the Indian Army. The objective is to replace aging INSAS rifles with new assault rifles. The company plans to accelerate the manufacturing and supply process by increasing production capacity.

Key features of the AK-203 ‘Sher’:

The AK-203 is a 7.62×39mm gas-operated assault rifle based on the Kalashnikov platform. Its key features include a firing rate of 700 rounds per minute, a range of approximately 800 meters, modern ergonomics, modular accessories, and enhanced combat capabilities. For UPSC aspirants, this news is significant in the context of defense modernization, indigenous defense production, India-Russia defense cooperation, and national security.
