New Initiative for High-Altitude Floriculture in Ladakh at 10,600 Feet

Two floriculture zones spanning 40 acres have been developed at Choglamsar and Stakna in Ladakh’s Leh district—situated at an altitude of 10,600 feet—where over 2.5 million (25 lakh) plants have been cultivated. The project primarily involves 2.4 million Lilium and 100,000 Gladiolus plants, with plans to develop a model floriculture center at Choglamsar. The initiative aims to diversify local farmers' income, boost employment and entrepreneurship, and link Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and cooperative societies with flower cultivation and marketing. This project presents an innovative example of the potential for climate-resilient agriculture, agricultural value chains, and commercial floriculture in high-altitude regions.

Two floriculture zones have been developed at Choglamsar and Stakna in Ladakh’s Leh district, at an altitude of approximately 10,600 feet. These zones cover a total area of ​​about 40 acres, where more than 2.5 million flower plants have been planted. The project was inaugurated on September 17, 2026, by Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena. It represents an innovative effort to promote commercial floriculture in the high-altitude Himalayan region.

Cultivation of Lilium and Gladiolus:

These floriculture zones primarily focus on the cultivation of Lilium and Gladiolus. The project comprises approximately 2.4 million Lilium and 100,000 Gladiolus plants. A demonstration and model center for Lilium, Gladiolus, Tulips, and other ornamental flower species will be developed at Choglamsar. The objective is to showcase the potential for scientific floriculture within Ladakh's unique climatic conditions.

Diversification of Farmers' Income:

The primary objective of this project is to develop floriculture as an alternative source of income for local farmers. Diversification of agricultural activities is crucial in Ladakh due to limited arable land and a harsh climate. The administration will handle cultivation and management during the initial phase; once the flowers bloom, selected Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and cooperative societies will be integrated into the process. This initiative has the potential to boost local employment, entrepreneurship, and income opportunities.

Value Chain and Market Linkage:

The project extends beyond mere flower cultivation to encompass harvesting, marketing, and value addition. Following the initial phase, cooperative societies will assume responsibility for cultivation, harvesting, and value addition. Given the demand for ornamental flowers in domestic and potential international markets, this initiative could prove instrumental in developing an agricultural value chain in Ladakh.

Agricultural Innovation in High-Himalayan Regions:

The Choglamsar flower zone was developed in approximately two months. Planting began on July 16, 2026, and the flowers started blooming in the first week of September. In Stakna, around 1.4 million (14 lakh) Lilium bulbs were planted in August 2026, with blooming expected by the end of October. This project demonstrates that agricultural diversification is feasible even in high-altitude regions through scientific techniques, appropriate crop selection, and farming practices adapted to the local climate.
