NSP-DBT Scholarship Initiative Launched for Agriculture Students

Published 13 August 2026

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the NSP-DBT initiative for agriculture students, aiming to make scholarship and fellowship payments faster, transparent, and streamlined. Under this initiative, ₹21.35 crore was transferred directly to the bank accounts of over 6,000 agriculture students via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The new system ensures eligible students receive scholarships on a monthly basis, minimizing payment delays and allowing them to focus better on their education and research. This initiative strengthens digital governance, financial inclusion, and targeted welfare delivery, while also emphasizing practical training and field-based learning in agricultural education.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the new NSP-DBT initiative for scholarship and fellowship payments to agriculture students through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The objective is to deliver financial assistance to eligible students pursuing agricultural education in a faster, more transparent, and organized manner.

Release of ₹21.35 Crore via DBT

Under the new system, a sum of ₹21.35 crore was transferred directly to the bank accounts of more than 6,000 agriculture students through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The DBT mechanism minimizes the role of intermediaries and facilitates the direct transfer of government benefits to the beneficiaries.

Monthly Scholarship Payments

A key feature of the new system is the provision of scholarship assistance to eligible agriculture students on a monthly basis. This aims to reduce payment delays, ensuring that students' studies and training are not hampered by financial constraints. Regular DBT payments will enable students to focus more effectively on their education, research, and practical training.

Significance of NSP and DBT

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) serves as a digital platform for the application, verification, and disbursement of various scholarship schemes. Integrating DBT with this portal makes the scholarship distribution process more transparent, time-bound, and trackable. This system aligns with the objectives of digital governance, financial inclusion, and targeted welfare delivery, while helping to minimize leakages and unnecessary delays in payments.

Emphasis on Practical Training in Agricultural Education

The Agriculture Minister emphasized the importance of practical training and field-based learning in agricultural education. Theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient to produce competent farmers, scientists, and agri-entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. It is essential to provide students with hands-on experience in fields, agricultural research institutes, and laboratories. This approach enables the integration of agricultural education with employment, research, innovation, and agri-entrepreneurship.

Significance for UPSC

This initiative is relevant to GS Paper-II (Governance, Education, Welfare Schemes) and GS Paper-III (Agriculture). It can be linked to topics such as DBT, Digital India, financial inclusion, transparency, last-mile delivery, agricultural education, and human capital development. In the UPSC Mains examination, this can be cited as an example to illustrate how digital technology can strengthen transparency and targeted delivery in government welfare schemes.
