During the April–July period of the 2026-27 fiscal year, India's finished steel consumption rose by 7.9% to 56 million tonnes, while production increased by 4.7% to 54.7 million tonnes. Crude steel production grew by 2.4% to reach 56.2 million tonnes, reflecting strong domestic demand within the steel sector. Imports of finished steel surged by 36.6% to 2.77 million tonnes, and exports rose by 35% to 2.29 million tonnes, leaving India a net importer. Alloy steel recorded robust growth in both production and consumption, whereas domestic production of stainless steel saw a decline despite rising demand.
During the period from April to July 2026 (fiscal year 2026-27), India's finished steel consumption increased by 7.9% to reach 56 million tonnes (MT). In the same period last year, it stood at approximately 52 million tonnes, signaling strong domestic demand.
Growth in Steel Production:
During this period, finished steel production rose by 4.7% to 54.7 MT, while crude steel production increased by 2.4% to reach 56.2 MT. In July 2026, finished steel consumption rose by 6.8% to reach 14.4 MT.
India's Steel Trade:
Imports of finished steel increased by 36.6% to 2.77 MT, while exports rose by 35% to 2.29 MT. Due to higher imports, India remained a net importer of steel during this period.
Key Trading Partners:
China accounted for 30.9% of India's finished steel imports, followed by South Korea (30.2%) and Japan (14.9%). Vietnam emerged as a major market for India's finished steel exports.
Trends in Alloy and Stainless Steel:
Alloy steel production increased by 26.7% to 3.71 MT, and consumption rose by 22.1% to 4.02 MT. Conversely, despite a rise in stainless steel consumption, production declined, leading to a sharp increase in imports.
Government Policies and UPSC Significance:
Emphasis is being placed on iron ore availability, investment in the mining sector, technological upgrades, and digitalization to foster the growth of the steel sector. For UPSC aspirants, this news is significant in the context of industrial development, infrastructure, mineral resources, the manufacturing sector, import-export dynamics, and the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
