Southern Railway Achieves 100% Electrification: 5,068 km Broad Gauge Network Now Electric

Southern Railway has completed the electrification of its entire 5,068 km broad gauge network, making it 100% electrified. The electrification of the final 71 km Pattukottai–Karaikudi section was completed following a statutory inspection on September 9, 2026, utilizing 25 kV AC traction. Electrification will reduce the need to switch between diesel and electric engines and is expected to improve speed, operational efficiency, and energy utilization. Southern Railway has completed the electrification of its entire 5,068-kilometer broad gauge network. This is a significant achievement for Indian Railways. With the completion of the statutory inspection of the final remaining 71 km Pattukottai–Karaikudi section on September 9, 2026, Southern Railway's entire broad gauge network became enabled for electric traction.

Pattukottai–Karaikudi Section Becomes the Final Link

Overhead Electrical Equipment (OHE) was installed and commissioned on the final section. Subsequently, a statutory inspection was conducted by the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer. A 25 kV AC traction system has been utilized on this section. Its completion has enabled electric traction across all broad gauge routes of Southern Railway.

Historical Evolution of Railway Electrification

Railway electrification in India began nearly a century ago. In the context of Southern Railway, the launch of electric rail service in Madras on May 11, 1931, marked a significant milestone. Later, in 1968, the Madras Beach–Tambaram section was electrified using the 25 kV AC system. This long-term process for Southern Railway concluded with the electrification of the final section in 2026.

Improvements in Operational Efficiency and Speed

Electrification reduces or eliminates the need to switch from diesel to electric engines en route, thereby saving operational time.
