UIDAI Launches Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox
UIDAI launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, enabling banks, insurance companies, and FinTech entities to integrate Aadhaar face authentication directly into their apps. The SDK supports both Android and iOS, eliminating the need for users to switch to a separate app for authentication. The Sandbox allows for the secure testing of processes such as consent, face capture, liveness detection, error handling, and anti-spoofing. According to UIDAI, the face authentication technology—introduced in 2021—has facilitated over 5 billion authentications to date and is being utilized in services like DBT, e-KYC, Jeevan Pramaan, PM-KISAN, and others.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) unveiled the Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) and the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026. The objective is to enable banks, insurance firms, brokerages, FinTech companies, and other entities to directly integrate Aadhaar-based face authentication into their digital applications.
Key Features of the Face Authentication SDK
The new SDK is a software tool that allows organizations to incorporate UIDAI's face authentication feature into their mobile applications. It supports both Android and iOS platforms. This eliminates the need for users to switch to a separate application for authentication, allowing identity verification to take place directly within apps such as those for banking or insurance.
Secure Testing via the Sandbox
The Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox provides a testing environment where organizations can test the entire authentication process before launching the actual service. It allows for the testing of scenarios such as user consent, face capture, liveness detection, authentication, error handling, response validation, network timeouts, and spoofing scenarios. Notably, this process does not require any external biometric hardware.
AI/ML-based Security and Anti-Spoofing
The Face Authentication SDK incorporates AI/ML-based liveness detection and anti-spoofing technologies. Its objective is to ensure that authentication is performed by a real person rather than through a photograph or other artificial means. The SDK also facilitates the secure handling and encryption of authentication-related information.
Growing Adoption of Aadhaar Face Authentication
According to the UIDAI, its face authentication technology was launched in 2021, and over 5 billion (500 crore) authentication transactions have been conducted using it. It is being utilized by government departments, state governments, banks, NBFCs, telecom companies, brokerage firms, and other entities. Key use cases include services such as the Digital Life Certificate (Jeevan Pramaan), Ayushman Bharat, DBT, Aadhaar-enabled Payment, e-KYC, PM-KISAN, and PMAY.
