UPI Sets New Record: A Sign of India's Growing Digital Economy and Payment Ecosystem
According to the NPCI, UPI transactions reached an all-time high of 24.51 billion in August 2026, with a total value of approximately ₹29.82 trillion. Average daily UPI transactions rose to 791 million, reflecting the rapidly growing acceptance of digital payments in India. In August, IMPS transactions stood at approximately 360 million, FASTag at 351 million, and AePS transactions at around 104 million, showing mixed trends. The expansion of UPI is playing a crucial role in financial inclusion, the growth of the digital economy, the integration of small merchants into the formal financial system, and the increased reach of digital payments.
According to the latest data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI transactions hit an all-time high of 24.51 billion in August 2026. The total value of these transactions was approximately ₹29.82 trillion. Transaction volume saw a growth of 3.6% compared to July 2026 and 22% compared to August 2025, highlighting the rising acceptance of digital payments in India.
Growing Daily Reach of UPI
Average daily transactions on UPI rose to approximately 791 million in August, up from around 763 million in July. The average daily transaction value saw a marginal decline, moving from approximately ₹96,383 crore in July to ₹96,205 crore. This indicates a rapid increase in the number of transactions, including small-value digital payments, on the UPI platform. As a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), UPI has become a cornerstone of India's digital economy.
Structure and Significance of UPI
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is an instant digital payment system developed by the NPCI. It facilitates immediate bank-to-bank payments via mobile phones by integrating various bank accounts. UPI has simplified payments through methods such as QR codes, mobile numbers, and UPI IDs.
Performance of IMPS, FASTag, and AePS
Mixed trends were observed across other digital payment systems in August 2026. IMPS transactions stood at approximately 360 million, recording a month-on-month decline of over 1%. Conversely, FASTag transactions rose by 1.2% to reach around 351 million. AePS (Aadhaar Enabled Payment System) transactions totaled approximately 104 million—a month-on-month increase of nearly 4%—though the transaction value registered a decline of about 5%.
Impact on Financial Inclusion in India
The expansion of digital payment channels like UPI fosters financial inclusion by extending banking and payment services to a wider population. Digital payments offer a convenient alternative for small merchants, rural consumers, and individuals integrating into the formal banking system. Furthermore, digital transactions can drive the formalization of economic activities, enhance transparency, and improve access to financial services.
