Villages housing 99.92% of India's population connected to banking services: A historic milestone in financial inclusion

Published 5 August 2026

According to the Ministry of Finance, India has ensured banking service access for villages covering 99.92% of the population; out of 6,01,328 inhabited villages, 6,00,868 are now connected via bank branches, Business Correspondents (BCs), or the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). This achievement has been made possible through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), the Business Correspondent model, and robust banking infrastructure. As of July 17, 2026, the country has 58.77 crore Jan Dhan accounts, over 1.81 lakh bank branches, and 17.36 lakh operational Business Correspondents. This progress plays a pivotal role in fostering financial inclusion, digital payments, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), and rural economic empowerment.

According to data released by the Ministry of Finance on August 3, 2026, India has ensured banking service access for villages covering 99.92% of the population. Out of the country's 6,01,328 inhabited villages, 6,00,868 are now connected to banking facilities through bank branches, Business Correspondents (BCs), or the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). This achievement is being hailed as a major success for India's financial inclusion program.

Significance of Financial Inclusion

The objective of financial inclusion is to provide affordable, secure, and accessible banking and financial services to every individual in society. It encompasses facilities such as savings accounts, credit, insurance, pensions, digital payments, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Financial inclusion is considered a cornerstone for poverty alleviation, social security, the digital economy, and inclusive growth.

Current Status of India's Banking Infrastructure

As of July 17, 2026, the country has over 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents (BCs), and 1.65 lakh service centers of the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) in operation. Notably, the Business Correspondent model has emerged as an effective medium for delivering banking services to remote and rural areas where establishing a full-fledged bank branch is not feasible.

Role of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is India's largest financial inclusion scheme, launched on August 28, 2014. By July 17, 2026, 58.77 crore bank accounts had been opened under this scheme, holding deposits exceeding ₹3,12,414 crore. The scheme has connected crores of citizens to the formal banking system, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), insurance, pension, and digital payment services.

Key Government Initiatives to Boost Rural Banking

The Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have implemented a 'Liberalised Branch Authorisation Policy' to enhance banking access in rural areas. Under this policy, commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), and local area banks can open new branches without prior RBI approval, provided that at least 25% of the new branches are established in rural areas lacking banking facilities. Additionally, the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) and Union Territory Level Bankers' Committee (UTLBC) regularly monitor the expansion of banking services.

Significance for the UPSC Examination

This topic is important for questions related to financial inclusion, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Business Correspondents (BC), India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), SLBC, and RBI's banking policies in the UPSC Preliminary Examination. In the Main Examination (GS-III: Indian Economy), this can be linked to the contexts of inclusive growth, rural banking, digital financial services, financial infrastructure, social security, banking reforms, and economic empowerment. This news serves as a significant example of rural development, the digital economy, and the expansion of financial access in India.
