According to the WDMMA Global Air Power Ranking 2026, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has secured the third position globally for the fifth consecutive year, surpassing China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). WDMMA's True Value Rating (TVR) system evaluates air forces not merely by the number of aircraft but also by their operational capability, modernization, and combat effectiveness. The Indian Air Force operates 1,716 military aircraft, including fighter jets, helicopters, trainer aircraft, and special mission aircraft. India's high ranking is primarily attributed to its balanced air fleet, advanced technology, indigenous defence manufacturing, and continuous military modernization.

WDMMA is an independent global organization that assesses air forces using its True Value Rating (TVR) system rather than relying solely on aircraft numbers. The TVR considers multiple parameters, including fleet size, aircraft diversity, modernization, mission capability, operational readiness, logistics, aerial refuelling capability, special mission aircraft, domestic aerospace industry, and future procurement plans.
Key Features of the Indian Air Force
According to WDMMA, the Indian Air Force operates 1,716 military aircraft, including approximately 542 fighter aircraft, 498 helicopters, 374 trainer aircraft, and 20 special mission aircraft such as Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft, aerial refuelling tankers, and intelligence aircraft. This well-balanced fleet enables the IAF to effectively undertake a wide range of military operations.
