WEF Chief Economists’ Outlook 2026: India’s growth prospects receive the strongest global assessment

Published 24 September 2026

India’s growth prospects were viewed positively in the WEF’s September 2026 Chief Economists’ Outlook; 98% of economists expected moderate or better growth, while 74% anticipated strong or very strong growth. Robust domestic demand is the primary driver of India's growth, whereas growth prospects for China and Europe were assessed as relatively weak. The WEF has projected India's GDP growth at 6.7% for 2026-27, though high energy prices, geopolitical tensions, and economic fragmentation remain key risks. Despite an improvement in global economic sentiment, 97% of economists identified geopolitical conflicts as a major potential source of uncertainty for the coming year.

According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) September 2026 Chief Economists’ Outlook, economists surveyed identified India as having the strongest growth prospects among the regions covered. A total of 98% of chief economists expect moderate or better economic growth in India over the next 12 months, with 74% projecting strong or very strong growth. In May 2026, the proportion of those expecting strong or very strong growth stood at 52%.

Domestic demand remains India's key strength:

According to the WEF, India's growth prospects are primarily supported by robust domestic demand. This serves as a crucial factor of resilience for the Indian economy amidst global uncertainties. In the WEF’s September survey, India and Southeast Asia received the strongest assessments regarding regional growth prospects.

India vs. China and Europe:

In contrast to the improving growth outlook for India, the assessment of China's growth prospects has weakened; meanwhile, although Europe's outlook has improved slightly, it remains the weakest among the regions included in the survey. According to the WEF, approximately one-third of economists anticipate weak growth in China, while 61% of economists predicted weak or very weak growth for Europe. Southeast Asia was also among the regions with strong growth prospects.

India's GDP Growth and Potential Risks:

The WEF's September 2026 assessment projects India's GDP growth for 2026-27 at 6.7%. However, high energy prices pose a significant risk to the Indian economy, given the country's heavy reliance on imports to meet its energy needs. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and geoeconomic fragmentation present external risks.

Improvement in Global Economic Sentiment, Yet Risks Persist:

In the WEF's September survey, 56% of chief economists expected global economic conditions to stabilize or improve over the coming year, a sharp rise from the 11% who held this view in May. Despite this, 97% of economists identified geopolitical conflicts as a potential source of uncertainty. The WEF also highlighted risks such as rising geoeconomic fragmentation, cost-of-living pressures, and asset-price corrections.
