West Bengal Government Declares 16 August as 'Ayushman Diwas'

Published 14 July 2026

The Government of West Bengal has announced that 16 August will be observed as 'Ayushman Diwas' to increase public awareness about the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Health camps, awareness drives, and public outreach programmes will be organized to enable more eligible families to benefit from the scheme. Under Ayushman Bharat, eligible families receive cashless health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year. This initiative marks an important step toward strengthening healthcare security, social welfare, and universal health coverage in the state.

The Government of West Bengal has announced that 16 August will be celebrated as 'Ayushman Diwas' across the state. The initiative aims to increase public awareness about the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and connect eligible beneficiaries with the health insurance scheme.

Purpose

Statewide awareness campaigns, public outreach programmes, and health camps will be organized to educate citizens about the scheme's eligibility criteria, benefits, cashless treatment facilities, and enrolment process, enabling more eligible families to avail themselves of the scheme.

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

AB-PMJAY is the flagship public health insurance scheme of the Government of India. It provides eligible families with cashless health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, allowing them to receive secondary and tertiary healthcare services at empanelled government and private hospitals.

Indication of a Policy Shift

The decision reflects changing priorities in the state's public policy and awareness campaigns. While 16 August was previously associated with promoting sports activities, it has now been dedicated to spreading awareness about health security, social welfare, and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Significance in Health Governance

The initiative is considered important for ensuring equitable access to healthcare services, providing financial protection, reducing healthcare expenditure, and strengthening social security. It also demonstrates efforts to improve the implementation and outreach of centrally sponsored health schemes.

Importance from UPSC Examination Perspective

The topic is important for UPSC Prelims in relation to Ayushman Bharat, AB-PMJAY, health insurance schemes, social sector programmes, and Centre-State relations. For UPSC Mains (GS Paper II), it serves as a relevant contemporary example in answers related to healthcare, social justice, welfare schemes, public policy, federal governance, and inclusive development.
